About Us

Ziji is a Tibetan word meaning "confidence" and "splendor" or "elegance." These qualities are said to be inherent in our own humanity. By creating uplifted spaces in our homes and workplaces, we reflect natural human radiance. At the same time, an elegant environment stimulates our innate wakefulness.

It was with these criteria in mind that in February 1986, Sky Brooks opened the first Ziji Store on Tenth Street in Boulder, Colorado. The little shop soon became a central resource for Buddhist practitioners in search of practice materials and inspiration; but its select assortment of jewelry, ceramics, scarves, and other Asian-inspired merchandise also attracted locals and tourists in search of the unusual. As word spread, Penny Lamphier joined Sky to help manage the burgeoning business.

I took Ziji over from Sky and Penny in 1997. My love of Japanese art and my personal commitment to Buddhism made it a perfect fit. Having just given birth to my second child, I needed something I could do from home—so equipped with Sky's international mailing list and loyal customer base, I transformed Ziji into a mail-order business.

Our four-color catalog soon became an underground hit. Within a few years, we added a website, enabling us to update our customers on an ongoing basis.

The Ziji Catalog is now entirely online. Our original mission hasn't changed, though; it's simply broadened its horizons. Our website continues to feature a constantly evolving assortment of splendid and elegant offerings.

Today, Ziji carries unique contemplative art, hard-to-find meditation supplies, dharma books, Buddha statues for your home and garden, Dharma art essentials including ikebana, calligraphy and tea ceremony supplies, jewelry, exclusive home décor and imaginative children's toys. Whether you're setting up a Buddhist altar or family meditation space, creating a contemplative garden, or simply looking for a new ikebana vase. tea ceremony set or calligraphy brush, we can help you find exactly the right item.

We hope you enjoy browsing our online catalog. We'd love to hear from you!
