Talk One from the Tibetan Buddhist Path Seminar
Chogyam Trungpa, Rinpoche
Naropa University, Summer 1974
Spiritual Materialism is talk one of The Tibetan Buddhist Path, the first seminar given by Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche during the inaugural summer session at Naropa University in Boulder, CO. More than 1,000 spiritual seekers were there to hear him speak. His message:
The spiritual quest is humanity's highest aspiration. However, be careful. Spiritual materialism, or the pursuit of spirituality for pleasure or to reinforce ego's game, is a constant danger on the path. We must acknowledge this obstacle from the beginning. The antidote is to employ critical intelligence, or a fundamentally cynical attitude, that allows us to uncover self-deception.
